A German court has ruled that Milka systematically deceived consumers by using packaging that artificially inflated the size of its chocolate bars through hollow spaces and thickened edges.
The court found that Mondelez misled Milka customers by reducing the weight of several chocolate products from 100 to 90 grams while maintaining nearly identical packaging.
According to the Regional Court of Bremen, this design choice led consumers to expect the same volume of product as before.
The court maintained that a clear and prominent notice regarding the weight reduction should have been displayed on the packaging for at least four months after the change. This ruling is not yet final, and Mondelez retains the right to appeal. Furthermore, data from the Hamburg Consumer Center shows that the price of a Milka Alpenmilch bar rose from €1.49 to €1.99, intensifying allegations of 'shrinkflation.'
