Asian Stocks Gain Following Wall Street Rally

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

Asian stock markets advanced on Monday, building on record highs achieved on Wall Street. This positive sentiment was fueled by a soft U.S. employment report, which lessened expectations of an imminent interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve.

Japan's Nikkei index climbed 2.0%, while South Korea's Kospi saw an increase of 0.8%. The broader MSCI index for Asia-Pacific shares, excluding Japan, rose by 0.7%. Meanwhile, S&P 500 futures gained 0.1%, and Nasdaq futures were up 0.3%.

Concurrently, oil prices saw an uptick amidst lingering uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Iran had announced on Sunday that an agreement with Oman concerning new shipping routes was nearing completion. However, Tehran underscored that the strait would only be fully accessible once the United States met additional conditions.

Brent crude futures advanced 0.6%, reaching $84.04 per barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil also rose 0.5%, trading at $78.56. Deliveries through this vital shipping lane continue to be minimal.

In contrast, Chinese blue-chip stocks (.CSI300) registered a slight decline of 0.7%. Recent data indicated that both consumer and producer inflation in July fell below forecasts, highlighting a persistent weakness in domestic demand.

Market participants are now keenly awaiting Wednesday's U.S. consumer price report. JPMorgan analysts project a modest 0.22% increase in core CPI. Michael Feroli, JPMorgan's chief U.S. economist, commented, "Our forecast is likely not high enough to trigger a Fed rate hike in September, though repeated readings closer to 0.3% could."

The futures market currently estimates the probability of a September rate hike has decreased to 45% from 67% just a week prior. The question remains how the forthcoming inflation report will influence future market dynamics.

Elsewhere, gold prices held steady at $4,333 per ounce, consolidating gains after rising more than 7% last week. The yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury notes stood at 4.662%.
