A total solar eclipse is impressive not only for its visual splendor. During the phase of totality, the very atmosphere of the surrounding world undergoes a change.

The light takes on an uncharacteristically cool hue, shadows sharpen, and the sky turns a deep blue-grey. Bright planets and stars may even become visible in the middle of the day.
Animals sometimes react to the sudden darkness as if evening has arrived: birds fall silent, and some insects alter their behavior. For humans, the contrast is particularly profound—just minutes earlier, it was an ordinary sunny day, and then a black circle, surrounded by a radiant corona, appears overhead.
The maximum duration of today's total phase will be approximately two minutes and eighteen seconds.

For instance, in Kyiv, the total phase will not be visible, but a small partial eclipse can be caught just before sunset: starting around 20:14, reaching its maximum at approximately 20:18, with the Sun setting around 20:23. It will be very low above the horizon in the west-northwest, requiring an open horizon or a high vantage point.
The Sun, the Moon, and an Amazing Coincidence
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon positions itself precisely between the Earth and the Sun.
However, the real marvel lies in their respective sizes.
The Sun is approximately 400 times larger than the Moon, yet it is also roughly 400 times farther away from Earth. Thanks to this extraordinary coincidence, their apparent sizes in our sky are nearly identical.

When the geometry aligns perfectly, the Moon can almost entirely obscure the solar disc, leaving only the radiant corona visible around its edges.
