European solar energy has reached a historic milestone. In June 2026, solar power plants generated a quarter of the European Union's total electricity for the first time — 25%, or a record 52 terawatt-hours.

Thanks to this, the sun became the largest source of electricity in the EU for the month, surpassing nuclear power, natural gas, wind, hydropower, and coal. For comparison, nuclear power plants provided about 21% of European generation, gas-fired plants 15%, wind farms 14%, and hydropower plants 12%.
The new record was significantly higher than the previous one, set just a month earlier. In May 2026, solar panels produced 47 terawatt-hours, providing 23% of the European Union's electricity. Thus, European solar energy has updated its own maximum for the second consecutive month.
Particularly high figures were recorded in Germany and Spain. In June, solar energy accounted for about 36% of German and 34% of Spanish electricity. In Spain, the share of solar generation exceeded one-third of the total electricity production for the first time.
The record was set during a period of intense heat, when electricity consumption significantly increased due to the active use of air conditioners. It was solar power stations that helped European energy systems cope with the increased daytime load.
This result shows how rapidly Europe's energy sector is changing. Not long ago, solar panels were perceived primarily as an additional source of energy, but now they are capable of providing electricity to hundreds of millions of residents and temporarily becoming the main element of an entire continent's energy system.
At the same time, European countries still need to develop battery storage and electricity grids to store surplus energy produced during the day and use it in the evening and at night. But the June record has already become an important confirmation: the transition to cleaner energy is not only continuing but also gaining momentum.
