SpaceX and Tesla are developing Terafab, a massive chip manufacturing complex slated for Texas. The initial phase alone is estimated at approximately $16.8 billion, and upon full completion, the complex could span around 9.3 million square meters — an area equivalent to roughly 1,300 football fields.
Elon Musk has already drawn comparisons between the future Terafab and the Pentagon, stating that the complex will be approximately 50 times larger.
However, sheer size isn't the sole significant factor.
Terafab is intended to provide Tesla and SpaceX with their own dedicated computing capabilities for Optimus, Cybercab, and future orbital infrastructure. Essentially, Musk aims to control the production of high-performance chips, one of the new economy's most critical and scarce resources.
This strategy mirrors Tesla's previous approach with batteries: if the market cannot supply the required volume, then the solution is to construct one's own gigafactory.
However, the stakes are significantly higher this time.
The scope now extends far beyond mere automobiles. Gradually, a single integrated system is emerging, encompassing robotics, autonomous transport, artificial intelligence, energy, semiconductors, and space.
Should this strategy prove successful, Terafab could transcend the role of a mere factory and become one of the pivotal assets of the AI era.
This is because in the unfolding technological race, victory will not solely belong to those who develop the finest artificial intelligence models.
Instead, triumph will be secured by those who control computation itself.
