Apple updates iMac with M6 chip and improved performance

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

On 27 October 2026, Apple introduced the updated 24-inch iMac with the M6 chip. This is the first modernization of the model in two years, which previously received the M4 processor in 2024.

The design remains the same: a 24-inch Retina 4.5K display with a resolution of 4480×2520 pixels, brightness of 500 nits, and support for a billion colors. The color options — blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange, and silver — are unchanged. The main innovations are concentrated inside: the M6 chip with configurations up to a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, as well as a dual 16-core Neural Engine.

According to Apple, the M6 delivers up to 40% faster CPU performance, up to twice as fast graphics, and up to five times faster on-device AI work compared with the M4. Memory bandwidth has increased to 170 GB/s. An N1 chip with support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, an optional 2.5Gb Ethernet port, and up to twice as fast SSD performance have been added. The base configuration includes 16 GB of unified memory and 256 GB of SSD storage.

Pricing starts at 1499 dollars for the model with a 10-core CPU/GPU and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. The version with 12 cores costs from 1699 dollars and offers four Thunderbolt 4 ports. Pre-orders open on 28 October, with sales beginning on 6 November. macOS 27 adds advanced Apple Intelligence features.

There are no major changes in design or display — this is primarily an update to the chip and connectivity. The 12 MP camera with Center Stage, speakers, and microphones remain the same. The manufacturer did not announce new battery options or significant improvements in peripherals.

Compared with its predecessor, the M4 iMac, it wins in CPU speed, graphics, and AI tasks. Competitors such as the Dell XPS 24 or HP Envy All-in-One offer similar prices but lag behind in software optimization and the Apple ecosystem. For users who value performance in Final Cut, Logic, or neural network tasks, the update is noticeable. Those looking for a radically new form factor should wait for the next announcements.

The model will suit those who want a noticeable increase in speed without a design change and at the same starting price.
