Phillip Island: legendary final MotoGP race (in Australia) postponed due to rain

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

On Sunday, 25 October 2026, at the Phillip Island circuit, the final MotoGP race of the season turned into a farewell ceremony that could not be held. Heavy rain and zero visibility forced the organizers to cancel all of the day's sessions, including the main Grand Prix, although the sprint the day before had taken place in dry weather.

The decision was made because it was impossible to ensure the operation of the medical helicopter: low cloud cover made the flight from Melbourne to the island unsafe. This is not merely a technical formality — in the event of a crash, minutes count, and the absence of a helicopter puts the riders' lives at risk. Phillip Island, where MotoGP had been held for almost 30 years, is passing into history in precisely this way: not to the roar of engines, but to the noise of a downpour and the disappointed sighs of packed grandstands.

The Grand Prix's move in 2027 to a street circuit in Adelaide looks like a logical step for the promoters, but it loses the very atmosphere for which fans and riders loved the island. Here wind and rain were always part of the show, not an obstacle. Now nature has reminded us that even the most carefully laid plans depend on the elements, and not only on budget and marketing.

The riders did nevertheless go out for a farewell lap behind the safety car, stopping on the start-finish straight to greet the fans. Jack Miller, the local hero, rode with a will, leaving one last vivid image of a vanishing era. For spectators who had bought tickets to the sold-out event, this was a bitter outcome: full and partial refunds will not bring back the emotions of a real race.

The situation lays bare a deeper problem: in the pursuit of spectacle and new formats, organizers are increasingly confronted with the vulnerability of classic circuits. Phillip Island is going away not because it has become outdated, but because modern sport demands predictability that a coastal island cannot provide. The future of MotoGP in Australia is now tied to the city streets of Adelaide — safer, but without that inimitable spirit.
