Spanish wave sweeps veterans aside: Khodar and Davidovich Fokina in the Shanghai final

On Saturday at the Qi Zhong courts, two young Spaniards rewrote the script of the Masters 1000 semifinals in Shanghai. Rafael Khodar, at 20 years old, defeated the tournament's 2019 champion Daniil Medvedev, while Alejandro Davidovich Fokina came back from a set down against top seed Alexander Zverev. Instead of the expected clash of experienced players, two representatives of the Spanish school will meet on court on Sunday.

Medvedev, the fifth seed, reached the semifinal after a win over Tommy Paul, but against Khodar his trademark attritional tactics did not work. The 20-year-old Madrid native, who began the season ranked 168, dictated the pace from the first minute and finished the match in one hour forty-four minutes — 6:3, 6:4. For the Russian, this is already his third career defeat in Shanghai semifinals, despite the title he won seven years ago.

Davidovich Fokina, for his part, showed character in his match against Zverev. After losing the first set 5:7, he regrouped and took the next two — 6:4, 6:3. The Spaniard, ranked 26, reached his second Masters final 1000 of his career, confirming that his aggressive style and ability to play the big points work even against the season's leader.

Behind this result lies more than individual form. The Spanish tennis school has traditionally been strong in team play and tactical flexibility. Khodar and Davidovich Fokina represent different generations, but both grew up in a system that emphasizes versatility and psychological resilience. Their path to the final is not an accident but a consequence of the depth of the field, where even players outside the top 20 are capable of beating favorites on a fast surface.

For Medvedev, the defeat means losing his chances at the title and complicating his battle for the ATP Finals in Turin. Khodar, by contrast, has moved closer to the coveted eight and will play in the final of a prestigious tournament for the first time in his career. Such an outcome highlights how quickly the balance of power is changing: experience and cunning give way to speed of reaction and fearlessness before authority figures.

A final between two Spaniards in Shanghai is a rare event for the Asian Masters 1000, where players from other regions previously dominated. This is not merely a change of champion but a signal that the tennis map of the world continues to be redrawn: new names from Europe are confidently taking the place of those who only recently seemed unshakeable.
