To hear music is a familiar miracle. To see how it sets matter in motion and gives rise to a living pattern is an altogether different encounter with sound.
Waves arise on the surface of a transparent liquid. The image beneath them bends, trembles, changes its outlines. This movement has a musical source: the vibrations transmitted to the liquid become part of the visible picture.
On 21 October 2026, Apple Music presented the film Made by Sound: Behind the new brand identity. It shows how the service's new visual identity was created — with the participation of the British musician and producer Fred again.. and his creative partner NEST Acoustics.
At the heart of this story is the possibility of tracing how music manifests itself in the material world.
Notes That Can Be Seen
For the shoot, the team used a special apparatus with liquid. A sound transducer transmitted mechanical vibrations to it, setting the surface in motion. Beneath the liquid was an image of Apple Music: passing through the moving medium, the light created shifting distortions.
The camera captured a genuine physical process. According to the production description, mineral oil was used for it, and the pattern of movement was filmed directly on set.
Thus a chain of interactions arose: the musical signal sets off vibration, the vibration sets the liquid in motion, the motion changes the passage of light — and an image appears before us.
The wave becomes a meeting place of what we hear and what we see.
A Short Melody with Its Own Handwriting
Fred again.. and NEST Acoustics took part in creating a short musical motif — the brand's sonic signature. Its notes became the basis for the visual movement.
In the published project description, the team formulated its task simply: to let sound create the image. Music was used as an active force within the filming process itself.
For the listener, this opens up yet another way of perceiving the composition. Sound is found to have visible consequences: the surface responds to vibrations, light passes through it differently, and a familiar sign acquires fluidity.
We observe how several physical processes combine into a single artistic event.
Beauty Is Born in Interaction
Of course, no melody has a single "true picture." The visible result depends on the properties of the liquid, the design of the apparatus, the lighting and the method of filming. Different conditions would have produced a different pattern.
And it is precisely here that the space for creativity emerges.
The musician chooses the sound. The engineers create the conditions for transmitting it. The liquid moves in accordance with its own properties. Light and camera reveal what becomes available to the eye.
Each participant has a role of their own. Their coordination allows a form to emerge that none of them creates alone.
To Hear with the Eyes
Everything sounds. The air transmits vibrations, water reveals them through movement, the body responds with breath and dance. And we take part in this music — with our voice, our step, our touch.
In this project, sound becomes visible. And it remains for us to continue the creative gesture: to hear, to respond, to bring something of our own.
After all, the symphony of the world is born also in our encounter with it. Every new response opens up yet another possibility for it to sound.
