Since there were very few comedies this year — "Little Brother", "Ladies First", "Spa Weekend"), we decided to focus on an excellent comedy from 2024.
Do you want to laugh or not? Then let's watch the 24 one! 😃 Just kidding. 😸 But seriously, the French romantic comedy "Pretend to Be My Bride" (original title L'heureuse élue) turned out to be very funny and original indeed, and if you missed it just like we did, feel free to put it on.
At times, of course, the plot descends into absurdity, but even so: the jokes hit their mark, the situations are fresh and unconventional, and the narrative remains incredibly fun and dynamic, like a glass of cold sparkling wine.
🎬 Cast: The protagonist, the infantile rich kid Benoît (Lionel Erdogan), falls into debt and concocts a crazy scheme: find a girl who will pretend to be his fiancée in order to wheedle a large part of the inheritance out of his wealthy parents
That role falls to the eccentric and charming Fiona (Camille Lelouche)
They are joined by the magnificent Michèle Laroque and Gérard Darmon, who add to the film that inimitable, spicy French charm
Of course, the plot isn't new, and the title speaks for itself. Yes, it's absurd at times, yes! But it's unlike anything else. Some jokes simply tear laughter from your chest. Don't rush to turn off the film if the beginning seems predictable to you: believe me, it will surprise you, and you'll laugh out loud more than once.
Just take this film as a light, sparkling comedy, and not as a deep "romantic melodrama" – and it will give you a wonderful evening.
Another big plus: the film is absolutely safe for family viewing, you can and should watch it with the whole family!
In places the story resembles "Pretend to Be My Wife" with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston: once again you have to pretend to be a couple in front of others, and one little fib quickly grows into new awkwardnesses. But the French film goes its own way — with a different character of the heroes and its own unexpected twists.
Yes, the story at times descends into absurdity. But it is precisely from this scheme that unexpected situations and jokes grow, at which we laughed out loud more than once. The film moves briskly and turns out to be far less predictable than its title promises.
Don't rush to turn it off after the first minutes. Just tune in for a comedy, not a serious romantic melodrama, and be sure to watch it to the end. It's a fun option for a family evening.
