Sometimes romantic cinema only needs one really good idea to make you believe in the genre again. "One Night Only" / One Night Only (2026) is exactly such a film.
There is romance, comedy, a bit of fantasy, an adventure through the night city and, most importantly, an unusual plot that does not look like another variation of the story "they met, quarreled and fell in love".
And yes, this is the first melodrama this year to which we give such a high score.

Fresh idea
This is perhaps the film's main virtue.
In romantic comedies today it is especially difficult to come up with a premise that the viewer has not already seen dozens of times.
But here it exists.
The action takes place in a slightly altered version of New York, where a very strange law is in effect: people who are not married are forbidden from having sexual relations.
But once a year the state makes an exception.
For one night the ban is lifted.
The film's world itself is slightly absurd, a bit dystopian, and yet light enough that the story does not turn into serious social science fiction.
Here the fantastic idea rather creates the conditions for a conversation about love.
What happens if physical intimacy turns into a state-sanctioned event, and real feelings turn out to be almost rarer than sex?
And can a person meet love precisely on that night when the whole surrounding world is looking for something completely different?
Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner are a great pair
The main roles were played by Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner.
Many remember Barbaro from "Top Gun: Maverick" and "A Complete Unknown", and Turner from "Fantastic Beasts" and the series "Masters of the Air".
And here a lot rests precisely on their interaction.
The chemistry is there.
Moreover, it arises not from obligatory beautiful scenes and kisses, but from conversations, glances, awkwardness, and the feeling that these two are genuinely interested in being near each other.
And this is incredibly important for romantic cinema.
You quickly start to treat the characters as real people, not as two characters that the screenwriter is obliged to bring together by the final credits.
It is both funny and romantic
Director Will Gluck, who directed "Easy A" and "Anyone but You," perfectly understands how a modern romantic comedy works.
Here, humor does not overshadow feelings, and romance does not turn into endless sugary syrup.
The film is quite adult, sometimes cheeky, sometimes absurd, but at the same time surprisingly warm.
And nighttime New York almost becomes a separate character in the film: restaurants, parties, streets, chance encounters — the characters are always running somewhere, finding someone, losing each other again, and thanks to that, the film also feels like a small adventure.
And the cast here is excellent
In addition to Barbaro and Turner, the film features Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, Molly Ringwald, LeVar Burton, Ziwe, King Princess, Ben Marshall, and Nicholas Braun.
Some appear only briefly, but it is precisely such characters that create the feeling of a huge, crazy city living its own life around the main characters.
Why is this worth watching?
- A new plot and a fresh idea. The concept of "one-night love" is presented here not as a banal resort romance, but as a question of the soul's survival in a world where emotions are forbidden.
- Genre mix. While the characters try to overcome absurd obstacles to meet, the film delivers great comedic situations. And the fantastic backdrop of a city that literally "comes alive" for one night adds scale and adventurous drive to the story.
- Will Gluck's direction. The author knows how to make the audience empathize, laugh, and believe in the magic of cinema. The chemistry between the characters hits right in the heart.

"Only for One Night" is a rare case where a high concept does not kill the sincerity of the story. The film makes you think: what would we do if we were given the chance to love for only 12 hours?
Watch it with warm drinks, with faith in miracles, and a readiness to smile from ear to ear. This is the very film that leaves a sweet aftertaste and a desire to immediately call someone dear to you.
Because the film doesn't try to invent a new philosophy of love.
It simply takes a very good science fiction idea and tells a beautiful human story based on it.
There is plenty of humor here.
Plenty of romance.
There is adventure.
There is a wonderful pair of main characters.
And, most valuable of all, after the film you are left with that light feeling for which people watch good melodramas in the first place: what if one chance encounter really can change everything?
Even if you have only one night for it.
"Only for One Night" is a surprisingly fresh, beautiful, and very charming romantic comedy.
A new plot, great chemistry between the main characters, and the right balance between romance, humor, and light science fiction.
Finally, a melodrama after which you don't want to look for flaws, but simply smile.
