If you enjoy Knives Out, classic Agatha Christie stories in the spirit of And Then There Were None, mysterious murders in a closed space and situations where literally anyone could be a suspect — take a look at the Spanish miniseries “The Last Case of Holmes”(2026).
And it turned out to be simply magnificent. We even liked it more than all the American equivalents.
The main character is Benjamin Basile, once a famous actor who made his name playing great detectives. He comes to Mallorca hoping to restart his career, but ends up in a secluded hotel where a mysterious death occurs. And here the skills he spent so many years portraying on camera suddenly have to be applied in real life.
Almost everyone is under suspicion.
Very quickly the series turns into a classic puzzle detective story: a closed space, a limited circle of characters, each with their own secrets, oddities and possible motives. At some point you start suspecting one person, ten minutes later — another, and a little while after that you realize you understand nothing at all. 😄
The lead role is played by José Coronado, and here he is magnificent. The series also stars María Valverde, Martiño Rivas, Maribel Verdú, Gonzalo de Castro and Pepón Nieto.
It is especially pleasing that the story is very compact — only four episodes, with a total running time of about three hours. That is, you can quite easily put the series on in the evening and watch it almost like one long film.
The first two episodes do an excellent job of setting the pieces on the board and gradually drawing you into the investigation.
But then the third episode unexpectedly changes the whole picture. From that moment on, it is practically impossible to tear yourself away from the screen.
But the creators saved the most interesting part for the finale.
The fourth episode is completely unpredictable. Even when it seems you have already figured everything out and all that is left is to have your theory confirmed, the story manages to turn itself inside out once again.
This is that rare case when you really want to watch a miniseries in one sitting: beautiful, atmospheric, smart, with a classic detective intrigue and a constant game with the viewer.
We loved it.
Gaya's rating: 8.9/10.
Four episodes. One hotel. A murder. Everyone a suspect. And a wonderful evening for lovers of good detective stories. And a very "twisty" plot.
