It seems Marvel has finally settled on the person who is to occupy one of the most challenging seats in superhero cinema.
As early as the beginning of August, Christopher Abbott was named as one of the contenders for the role of Charles Xavier — Professor X in the new version of the X-Men. It was reported that the actor had screen-tested along with several other candidates.
But now the suspense has already been resolved.
At D23, Marvel officially announced: Christopher Abbott will become the new Professor X in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy
Abbott's task is almost thankless.
For several generations of viewers, Charles Xavier has two faces.
The first is Patrick Stewart, who played the wise and almost monumental professor in the original X-Men series.
The second is James McAvoy, who showed a younger, more emotional, and at times very vulnerable Xavier.
Now Marvel will have to create a third major version of the hero.
And the choice of Abbott hints that the studio wants to go a completely different route.
Why Christopher Abbott is an interesting choice
Abbott has never been a typical candidate for the role of an ideal superhero.
And that is precisely why the decision looks intriguing.
He is known for projects such as Poor Things, Possessor, Catch-22, Wolf Man and the drama James White. He is much more often cast as anxious, ambiguous, internally complex people than as classic heroes.
He has a rare quality: even when the character is silent, one gets the feeling that much more is happening inside him than he shows to those around him.
For Charles Xavier, this could prove ideal.
Professor X is, after all, far from just a kind mentor in a wheelchair.
He is one of the planet's most powerful telepaths, a man with immense power over others' minds, and at the same time a leader who must constantly decide where the line lies between protecting people and controlling them.
In good X-Men stories, Xavier is always a bit more dangerous than he seems.
And Abbott is capable of showing that side.
Marvel was indeed looking for a new Xavier
Before the official announcement, there were many rumors surrounding the role.
Among the actors who auditioned or were considered for the role were Bill Skarsgård, Tom Pelfrey, Harris Dickinson, and Will Poulter.
Abbott himself did audition.
For a while, it was completely unclear whether Marvel had chosen him or was still searching.
Now we know the answer.
And, apparently, Marvel deliberately decided to move away from the obvious "star" casting in favor of an actor capable of making the character more psychologically complex.
The new X-Men are already assembling
Xavier is far from the only new mutant in the MCU.
Marvel has already introduced the main cast of the upcoming film.
Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey.
Kit Connor — Cyclops.
Samara Weaving — Emma Frost.
Maya Boyd — Storm.
Inde Navarrette — Rogue.
And one of the team's main adversaries will be Mister Sinister, played by Adam Driver.
It's turning out to be a very unusual ensemble — far less predictable than many fan castings of recent years.
A New Era of Mutants
The director's chair is occupied by Jake Schreier, and the premiere of the new version of "X-Men" is currently planned for 5 May 2028.
For Marvel, this is one of the most important projects of the coming years.
The X-Men have been separated from the main cinematic universe for too long, and now the studio faces not just introducing a new team, but re-explaining who mutants are within the MCU.
And it is Professor Xavier who will be the person around whom this story is largely meant to be built.
That's why the choice of Christopher Abbott looks especially intriguing.
He resembles neither Stewart nor McAvoy.
He lacks the usual superhero solemnity.
But he has inner tension, intelligence, and a sense of hidden power.
And perhaps this is exactly the Professor X that Marvel needs now — not an impeccable sage, but a man who truly has to struggle with the weight of his own power.
