In the shaded coffee gardens of the Colombian Andes, it's easy to assume that simply planting trees above the coffee bushes will bring the birds back. Birdsong echoes from all directions, canopies form multi-layered shelters, and the system appears far more natural than barren monocultures. However, new research indicates that even the most well-managed farms remain vacant if there isn't sufficient forest cover nearby.
Scientists conducted a study on bird communities within coffee plantations and forests across the Eastern Andes. Applying occupancy models, they discovered that the primary factor wasn't just the shade on the farm itself, but rather the amount of forest cover within a two-kilometer radius. This metric had the strongest influence on bird presence across nearly all groups, from forest specialists to insectivores and frugivores.
Species closely linked to untouched forests proved particularly vulnerable. They were rarely observed on plantations when forest cover in the surrounding area dropped below thirty percent. A noticeable presence required approximately forty-five percent forest cover.
Generalist species adapted better to shaded gardens. However, even these species, in heavily deforested regions, had to seek out denser and more diverse canopy within the farm itself.
Seasonal changes introduce another layer of complexity. During migrations, when northern birds arrive, forests became more crucial, providing birds with increased food and shelter during critical periods. This underscores the importance of maintaining habitat diversity year-round.
The findings challenge the conventional approach, which often focuses solely on on-farm practices, such as shade-grown coffee certifications and shade management. While such measures are beneficial, particularly for common species, their impact is limited without forest presence within the broader landscape. The study advocates for a combined approach: conserving and restoring forests across entire regions while simultaneously improving conditions on plantations.
Birds do not compartmentalize the world into isolated plots; instead, they perceive it as an interconnected mosaic. Consequently, preserving biodiversity in coffee-growing regions necessitates thinking beyond the boundaries of a single farm.
