Hyderabad is participating in the City Nature Challenge (CNC) 2025, a global event that encourages people to document urban biodiversity using the iNaturalist app from April 25-28. Participants upload photos of plants, animals, and insects, noting the location, date, and time.
The CNC helps researchers study species distribution and conservation needs. In 2024, Hyderabad was among the top cities, securing the 13th position globally and second in Asia. The city documented over 34,000 observations with 527 observers identifying 2,092 species.
The Neem tree and Sacred Fig were the most observed plants, while the Peacock and Red-vented bulbul were the most spotted birds. The City Nature Challenge, initiated by Alison Young, Rebecca Johnson, and Lila Higgins, aims to document urban biodiversity.
