Researchers from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) have discovered a new species of rootless orchid, *Chiloschista tjiasmantoi*, endemic to Sumatra, Indonesia. Found in Aceh, the orchid is named after environmental philanthropist Wewin Tjiasmanto in recognition of his support for flora conservation efforts in Indonesia. This unique orchid grows on trees in semi-open plantations near forests, camouflaged by its bark-like color. Its small, bright yellow flowers are crucial for detection. Already classified as endangered due to its limited distribution, small population size, and threats from plantation expansion and climate change, urgent expansion of protected areas in Aceh is needed to preserve this and other threatened plant species. The orchid's unique adaptation of using its roots for photosynthesis, due to extreme leaf reduction, presents opportunities for further biological research.
