New Leafless Orchid Species Discovered in Sumatra and Machu Picchu

Researchers have identified two new orchid species in distinct locations. In Sumatra, Indonesia, BRIN researchers discovered *Chiloschista tjiasmantoi*, a leafless root orchid, honoring Wewin Tjiasmanto. This endangered species, found at 700-1,000 meters, is unique for conducting photosynthesis primarily through its roots. Its discovery marks the first recorded presence of *Chiloschista* orchids in Sumatra. Meanwhile, in Peru's Machu Picchu, scientists identified *Pleurothallis machupicchuensis*. This orchid, found in montane forests at 2,000-2,500 meters, grows on *Clusia* trees near the Urubamba and Usmubamba rivers. Its conservation status is currently classified as Data Deficient, highlighting the need for further research. These discoveries underscore the rich biodiversity of both regions and the importance of conservation efforts.
