Atlantic bluefin tuna have reappeared in the waters off the Yorkshire coast — giant fish that had not been seen here since the 1960s. Two specimens weighing more than 300 kilograms each were caught in August 2026 off Whitby, and this event became a notable signal of change in the ecosystem of the North Sea.
In the 1930s, the famous "tunny" fishery flourished off Scarborough and Whitby: even Hollywood stars came here to try their luck with the enormous fish. By the 1960s the tuna had disappeared — the blame lay with overfishing and a sharp decline in herring stocks, their main prey. Decades of strict international quota regulation allowed the population to recover, and now the fish are returning to their former habitats.
Scientists from the University of Exeter tagged five tuna off Whitby to track their migrations. These specimens turned out to be larger than those found off the southern coast of England and may belong to a different genetic group. According to the researchers, the return is linked not only to the growth of herring numbers but also to changes in the North Sea, where the waters have warmed noticeably over recent decades.
Such cases show how careful management of fish stocks can bring species back to their historical territories. When the herring population began to recover after the fishing ban in the 1970s, the tuna once again found an abundant food base here. This is not a coincidence but the result of consistent decisions taken at the international level.
The restoration of the North Sea ecosystem affects not only fishermen and scientists. It is a reminder that marine communities are closely interwoven: the disappearance of one link in the chain sets off a chain reaction, and its return gives the whole system a chance. The tuna, like wanderers returned to their native waters, illustrate how sensitive the oceans are to our actions.
