Canary Islands: Archipelago of eternal spring, volcanoes, and ocean-1

When thinking of an ideal vacation spot to escape the winter chill, the Canary Islands immediately come to mind. Located in the Atlantic Ocean, just a hundred kilometers off the coast of Africa, but politically belonging to Spain, they represent a unique world. This is not just a beach resort, but an archipelago with a stunning diversity of landscapes: from lunar volcanic deserts to emerald laurel forests and majestic mountain peaks.

Seven Pearls of the Atlantic

The Canary archipelago consists of seven main islands, each with its own unique character.

1. Tenerife — Island of Contrasts

The largest and most popular island of the archipelago. Its hallmark is Mount Teide, the highest point in Spain. Tenerife surprises with its diversity: the green and humid north with lush vegetation sharply contrasts with the dry and sunny south, where the main resorts are located. One of the most vibrant carnivals in the world also takes place here.

2. Gran Canaria — A Continent in Miniature

This island is often called a "continent in miniature" due to its incredible diversity of landscapes within a small area. The south of Gran Canaria is famous for the vast sand dunes of Maspalomas, reminiscent of the Sahara, while the center of the island features deep ravines, pine forests, and rocky mountains.

3. Lanzarote — Martian Landscapes

The easternmost and one of the oldest islands. Lanzarote looks like another planet: solidified lava flows, volcanic craters of Timanfaya National Park, and snow-white architecture created according to the principles of the great local artist and architect César Manrique. Building higher than a palm tree is forbidden here to preserve its pristine beauty.

4. Fuerteventura — Surfer's Paradise

The windiest and most desert-like island with endless white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. It is a mecca for windsurfers and kitesurfers from all over the world. Fuerteventura is ideal for those seeking solitude, space, and communion with the ocean.

5. La Palma — "The Beautiful Island"

The greenest and most humid island of the archipelago. La Palma boasts deep canyons, banana plantations, and dense forests. It is home to one of the world's best observatories, and its sky is recognized as one of the clearest for astronomical observations. The island recently gained global attention after the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano in 2021.

6. La Gomera — The Island of Whistles

A small, mountainous, and very green island covered with ancient laurel forests (Garajonay National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site). Its main cultural attraction is Silbo Gomero, a unique whistling language that locals use to communicate across deep ravines.

7. El Hierro — The Edge of the World

The smallest and most remote island, which for a long time was considered the edge of the known world (it was from here that the Prime Meridian was measured). El Hierro is a nature reserve of untouched wilderness, an ideal place for diving and ecotourism. Locals have even attempted to make the island completely energy independent.

Climate: Where Spring Blooms Year-Round

The Canaries are called the "islands of eternal spring." Thanks to the warm Canary Current and trade winds, the temperature here rarely drops below +18°C in winter and rarely rises above +28°C in summer.

However, the climate on the islands is microclimatic. You might find yourself in a situation where it's drizzling on the north coast, and everything is bathed in greenery, while just 30 kilometers to the south, the sun shines brightly, and drought prevails. The ocean here is cooler than in the Mediterranean Sea (around +19°C to +22°C), but it offers excellent refreshment on hot days.

Gastronomic Treasures

Canarian cuisine is a symbiosis of Spanish traditions, Latin American influences, and recipes of the indigenous inhabitants (Guanches).

Papas arrugadas con mojo ("wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce") is the main national dish. Small potatoes are boiled in very salty water with their skins on and served with red (spicy) or green (herbal) mojo sauce.

Gofio is flour made from roasted grains, which was used by the Guanches in their food. Today, it is used in soups, desserts, and even made into ice cream.

Majorero Cheese is a famous goat cheese from the island of Fuerteventura, often coated with paprika or oil.

Malvasia Wine is a sweet volcanic wine that was once highly valued in Europe and even mentioned by Shakespeare. The grapes here grow in unique volcanic depressions.

What to Do in the Canaries?

1. Hiking: The network of trails (e.g., Camino Natural) is superbly developed here. Climbing Teide, walking through the ravines of Gran Canaria, or hiking the trails of La Palma will leave unforgettable impressions.

2. Whale and Dolphin Watching: In the strait between Tenerife and La Gomera, populations of sperm whales, pilot whales, and dolphins reside year-round.

3. Astro-tourism: The Canary Islands have the status of a "Starlight Reserve Destination." Excursions to telescopes are organized here, and visitors are taught how to read the night sky.

4. Water Sports: From relaxed snorkeling in the bays of La Palma to conquering giant waves in Fuerteventura.

Practical Information

Visa: The Canary Islands are part of Spain, so a Schengen visa is required for entry.

How to Get There: Direct flights are available from many major European and Russian cities (seasonally). Ferry services between the islands are well-established (companies Fred. Olsen and Naviera Armas), and local airlines operate (Binter Canarias, Canaryfly).

Transport: On the islands themselves, it is best to rent a car to have freedom of movement and reach wild beaches and viewpoints. Public transport (buses called guaguas) runs well, but only on main routes.

When to Go: The Canaries are beautiful at any time of year. For a beach holiday, the summer and early autumn months are best (when the ocean is warmest). For hiking and excursions, spring and autumn are ideal.

The Canary Islands are a place that breaks the stereotypes of a typical beach holiday. Here, you can drink coffee in the morning while looking at a tropical forest, walk on black volcanic beaches in the afternoon, and dine under the stars of the Milky Way in the evening. It is an archipelago that gives a feeling of freedom, natural power, and endless spring, a place you will want to return to again and again.
