From Form to Precision: How Alias 2027 Streamlines the Automotive Design Journey

Edited by: Irena II

In automotive design, creative vision constantly grapples with technical precision: a surface begins as a conceptual study of proportions, yet at every stage, it must be evaluated, refined, and handed off without compromising the original intent.

This very tension was explored by Barry Kimball, Technical Product Manager at Autodesk, during a Design Deep Dive session at AIF 2026 (June 2–3 in Darmstadt). He demonstrated how Alias 2027 empowers modelers to visualize geometric behavior earlier, make faster decisions, and minimize rework as the project evolves.

The core challenge is not a lack of tools, but rather an excessive "management overhead": minor topology shifts impact reflections and transitions, often forcing designers to diagnose problems only after they have surfaced. New visualization modes—shading, facet analysis, edge display, and open-edge identification—allow for a look "beneath the surface" at the control mesh stage. Instead of correcting errors late in the process, designers can see them in real-time and respond proactively.

The Region mode transforms the workflow itself: instead of constructing quads one by one, modelers can block out large areas, adjust density based on curvature, and seamlessly blend these with traditional methods.

A standout feature in Alias 2027 is Navasto, an integrated AI tool for aerodynamics. Traditionally, aerodynamic analysis occurs late in the development cycle after the form is frozen. Navasto pulls this into the early design phase, providing real-time feedback on how decisions affect drag and airflow, allowing for bold experimentation without the risk of an inefficient design. This reduces iterations and, most importantly, allows designers and engineers to speak the same language from the very beginning.

Technology previews point toward a future where routine tasks like cleanup can be automated via commands. This frees up designers to focus on aesthetic judgment and form—the true heart of their profession.

Ultimately, Alias is evolving toward transparency over complexity: tools are becoming less intrusive, their logic more intuitive, and the room for human craftsmanship is expanding. In an industry where speed is only valuable when it leads to better solutions, this evolution is essential.
