Call for Papers: Special Issue on Heritage Languages in Germany

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Konstanz and UiT The Arctic University of Norway announce a Special Issue focused on Heritage Languages in Germany. This initiative addresses the linguistic diversity stemming from significant immigration, with migrants constituting nearly 15% of Germany's population. Key countries of origin include Turkey, Poland, and Syria.

Germany recognizes only one official language, yet minority languages such as Danish, Frisian, Romani, and Sorbian contribute to its rich linguistic landscape. Although heritage language research has gained momentum, particularly concerning Romance and Slavic languages, studies on smaller minorities and non-Indo-European languages remain limited.

This Special Issue aims to bridge gaps in heritage language research by exploring diverse linguistic domains, age groups, and types of minorities. Contributions are welcomed from immigrant minorities, like Arabic, as well as indigenous and national minorities, such as Frisian and Danish. Submissions should focus on specific languages, beginning with demographic information, and can adopt either formal or empirical approaches.

Manuscripts can be submitted via www.mdpi.com, with a deadline for submissions. All accepted papers will undergo a peer-review process and will be published continuously. Research articles, review articles, and short communications are invited. Authors are encouraged to consult the Instructions for Authors page for submission guidelines. The Article Processing Charge for publication is 1400 CHF.
