Democrats Elect New DNC Chair Amid Trump's Popular Vote Win

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) -- Democrats are electing a new party leader on Saturday, following the tumultuous 2024 election in which Donald Trump became the first Republican in two decades to win the popular vote. The new Democratic National Committee chair will succeed Jaime Harrison, who did not seek another term.

More than 400 DNC members gathered in suburban Washington for the election, with leading candidates including Ben Wikler of Wisconsin and Ken Martin of Minnesota. Both candidates aim to refocus the Democratic message on working-class voters and strengthen party infrastructure nationwide.

Wikler and Martin would be the first white men to lead the DNC since 2011, should they win. Other candidates include former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley and Faiz Shakir, who managed Bernie Sanders' last presidential campaign.

As of now, only 31% of voters view the Democratic Party favorably, contrasting with 43% for the Republican Party, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.
