European Union Launches IRIS² Satellite Network to Compete with Starlink

The European Union has initiated an ambitious project to deploy a satellite network aimed at rivaling SpaceX's Starlink. Named IRIS² (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnection, and Security by Satellite), this new system intends to provide secure, sustainable, and accessible connectivity, enhancing Europe's technological independence in space.

While Starlink has launched over 4,000 satellites to deliver internet access in remote areas, IRIS² will initially feature a constellation of 290 multi-orbital satellites. This network aims to offer high-speed, low-latency connectivity, focusing on ensuring the security of governmental and commercial communications within European territory.

Starlink has been recognized for its effectiveness in rural areas and emergency scenarios, such as in Ukraine, where Musk's connectivity was crucial during the conflict. However, the EU views reliance on a private American company as a strategic risk, reinforcing the need for its own solution.

A key component of this initiative is the Xtend 5G program, designed to extend mobile network coverage to rural and remote areas through satellite technologies. This program will complement existing terrestrial infrastructures, providing high-quality connectivity in places where traditional networks cannot reach.

The European Commission has signed a contract with the SpaceRISE consortium, which includes companies like Airbus, Thales Alenia Space, and SES, to lead the development of the IRIS² satellite constellation. This agreement entails an initial investment of €2.4 billion for the manufacturing, launching, and operation of the IRIS² satellites.

The system is also designed to be interoperable with other technologies, allowing integration with current telecommunications infrastructures, further strengthening the EU's strategy to position itself as a leader in global connectivity.

IRIS² represents more than just a satellite network; it is a crucial step towards ensuring Europe's technological and strategic sovereignty. In a global context where geopolitical tensions impact supply chains and access to critical technologies, the EU aims to reduce its dependency on third countries.

Moreover, this project underscores Europe's commitment to sustainability. IRIS² will utilize satellites designed to minimize the risks of space debris, a growing concern due to the proliferation of objects in Earth's orbit.

With this initiative, the EU not only ensures the security and resilience of its communications but also aspires to lead the next generation of connectivity, competing with giants like SpaceX, Amazon (with its Kuiper project), and China.

Through IRIS² and the Xtend 5G program, Europe positions itself as a key player in the race for global connectivity dominance. This project not only strengthens its technological independence but also marks a milestone in the responsible and strategic use of space.
