Western Australia Government Allocates $3.7 Million to Enhance Indigenous Education and Health Services

On October 16, 2024, the Western Australia Government announced a $3.7 million investment aimed at extending operations of two significant projects for the Martu people in East Pilbara. This funding includes $1.45 million for the Martu Student Hostel in Newman, which will support its operation for the 2025 school year.

The hostel, established through a partnership involving the Martu Schools Alliance and operated by 54 Reasons, provides accommodation for male and female students. Currently, ten students are enrolled, including two year 12 students who are poised to become the first Martu individuals to complete secondary education at Newman Senior High School.

Additionally, the Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service Inc. received $2.25 million to extend The Jiji Program for three more years. This program focuses on delivering occupational and speech therapy to children in remote Western Desert communities, ensuring access to essential health services.

The funding aims to meet increased service delivery costs and enhance the program's sustainability by employing specialists and training local Martu women. This initiative is part of the State Government's broader commitment to improving educational and health outcomes for Indigenous families in the region.
