Israel Enters Active War State Amid Yom Kippur Observance as Conflict with Hamas and Hezbollah Escalates

On October 11, 2024, Israel entered an active state of war during Yom Kippur, marking the first time since 1973 that this holy day has coincided with a military conflict. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that they would refrain from communications unless civilians were attacked or significant operational events occurred.

As part of the Yom Kippur observance, which includes fasting and prayer, public transportation and vehicle use are restricted to emergencies. The airspace is closed for 25 hours, and live radio and television broadcasts are suspended.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shared a message of prayer for the safety of IDF soldiers at the Western Wall shortly before Yom Kippur began. He emphasized the commitment to protect Israel and called for prayers for the return of hostages and peace for combatants.

The current conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an unexpected attack on Israeli territory, resulting in nearly 1,200 deaths and over 250 hostages. The ongoing military operations in Gaza have reportedly led to around 41,500 casualties and displaced nearly two million people.

Additionally, Israel has been engaged in intense border clashes with Hezbollah, with recent escalations resulting in over 2,100 deaths and 11,000 injuries in Lebanon due to increased Israeli bombardments and ground incursions.
