UNHCR-Organized Flight Evacuates 139 Refugees from Libya to Italy for Integration Support

On [Date - Today's Date], 139 refugees, including 39 women and 69 minors, arrived at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Fiumicino, Rome. The refugees were evacuated from Tripoli, Libya, via a charter flight organized by UNHCR. The evacuation was made possible by a protocol signed in December 2023 between the Italian Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, UNHCR, Arci, and the Community of Sant'Egidio. The refugees, originating from various African nations, will be hosted in Italian regions by the Community of Sant'Egidio, Arci, and the SAI national reception system. They will undergo an integration process, including language training and job placement for adults, and schooling for minors. Since February 2016, humanitarian corridors have facilitated the arrival of approximately 8,000 refugees in Europe.
