Jordan Rejects Trump's Proposal to Relocate Gaza Residents Amid Ongoing Tensions

On January 26, 2025, Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi firmly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to relocate residents of Gaza to Jordan, emphasizing the country’s commitment to a two-state solution as the only viable path to peace and stability in the region.

During a joint press conference with UN humanitarian coordinator Sigird Kagh, Safadi stated, "The solution to the Palestinian issue is in Palestine, and Jordan is for Jordanians, while Palestine is for Palestinians." He reiterated Jordan's stance against the displacement of Palestinians, asserting that their rights must be recognized in their own homeland.

Trump had suggested that Egypt and Jordan should temporarily or permanently accept up to 1.5 million Palestinians from Gaza, describing the region as "literally destroyed" and expressing a desire to "clean up the area." Safadi's remarks came in response to Trump's comments made during a press briefing on Air Force One.

Jordanian analysts have characterized Trump's proposal as a dangerous threat to regional security, arguing that it undermines the rights of Palestinians and poses risks to Jordan and Egypt. Areeb al-Rantawi, director of the Jerusalem Center for Political Studies, called the proposal an aggressive stance from the new U.S. administration.

In Gaza, reports indicated that Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian crowds over the weekend, resulting in two deaths, including a child, and multiple injuries. This violence occurred despite a ceasefire agreement that began on January 19, which saw Israel withdraw from several areas of Gaza.

As tensions continue, the Israeli Prime Minister's office announced that no civilian returns to northern Gaza would be permitted until the release of an Israeli hostage, Arbel Yehud, is resolved. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to visit Israel on January 29 to monitor the ceasefire.
