Montreal Port Workers Begin Unlimited Strike Amid Labor Dispute

On October 31, unionized workers initiated an unlimited strike at two terminals of the Port of Montreal due to stalled negotiations over a new labor contract. The strike affects terminals operated by Termont, which are responsible for approximately 40% of the port's container traffic.

The Maritime Employers Association has urged federal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon to intervene and facilitate negotiations, citing concerns over the economic impact of prolonged labor disputes on both Quebec and Canada’s reputation as a trading partner.

The union, representing the longshore workers, has targeted Termont specifically, alleging punitive modifications to work schedules. The federal government remains open to mediation to expedite a resolution.
