Japan Lifts Tsunami Advisory After Earthquake Near Izu Islands

Japan lifted a tsunami advisory for its remote Izu and Ogasawara Islands on September 24, 2024, following a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 in the Pacific Ocean near the uninhabited island of Torishima. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that no major tremors were observed after the quake, which struck approximately 600 kilometers (370 miles) south of Tokyo.

Despite the initial warning, there were no reports of serious damage to infrastructure or casualties. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government noted that the Izu Islands and the more remote Ogasawara Islands have a combined population of around 24,000 residents across a dozen inhabited islands.

Japan is situated on four major tectonic plates and experiences about 1,500 earthquakes annually, most of which are minor. The country’s advanced building techniques and well-rehearsed emergency protocols typically mitigate the effects of significant seismic events.
