EU Backs Open-Source AI Project for All Member Languages

Edited by: Veronika Nazarova

Prague - The European Union is investing in open-source AI with the OpenEuroLLM project, aiming to develop large language models (LLMs) for all 24 official EU languages, plus languages of candidate countries like Albania.

Co-led by experts from Charles University in Prague and Finnish AI lab Silo AI, the project involves 20 organizations and is budgeted at €37.4 million for model development. This initiative aligns with Europe's push for digital sovereignty, ensuring mission-critical infrastructure and data remain within the EU. While some question the efficiency of such a large consortium, proponents emphasize the project builds on existing work and expertise in high-performance language technologies.
