The 2024 Broadband Development Congress in Cape Town emphasized the critical role of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing broadband access across Africa. Hosted by the World Broadband Association (WBBA) during the Africa Tech Festival, the event brought together global leaders from various sectors to address broadband challenges and opportunities.
A key highlight was the launch of a whitepaper titled The Role of AI in Fixed Networks Sustainability, which discusses how AI solutions can improve operational efficiencies, reduce energy consumption, and lower carbon emissions in broadband infrastructure.
With broadband subscriptions increasing by 22% over the past year, the conference underscored the importance of innovation and partnerships, projecting broadband service revenues to reach $6.7 billion by 2029.
Li Zhengmao, Chairman of the WBBA, opened the event by discussing the transformative potential of broadband in Africa. He was joined by Nfaly Sylla from Guinea's Ministry of Posts, who highlighted national initiatives supporting digital growth.
Discussions included the evolution of telecom companies into 'techcos' and the importance of equitable digital infrastructure access. Experts from various organizations shared insights on investments, regulatory frameworks, and practical steps to accelerate broadband deployment.
In his closing remarks, WBBA Director General Martin Creaner emphasized the concept of smart sustainability, stating that AI can significantly enhance network planning and management, addressing the challenge of data availability and quality.
The whitepaper is available for download on the WBBA website, providing guidance for industry leaders aiming to create a sustainable, digitally connected Africa.
