The World Team Disc Golf Championship commenced on November 6, 2024, at the Mundaring Sports Club near Perth, Australia. A total of 23 national teams, including Lithuania, are competing in two professional disc golf parks over four days, culminating in the crowning of new champions on November 9.
This championship features a unique team format, where each player competes against opponents to earn points for their team. The tournament is organized by the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF), which emphasizes inclusivity. Each team consists of six players, including three from the open division, two women, and one player aged 40 or older.
The Lithuanian team, selected based on player rankings, includes notable athletes such as Domas Šimkūnas, who recently won the Lithuanian Cup, multiple national champion Gabrielius Gricius, veteran Linas Strelkauskas, and top female representative Mireta Jurgelevičiūtė. Oksana Žukauskienė, the second-ranked player in Lithuania, and Vytenis Čukauskas, the 2023 national champion in the 40+ category, complete the roster.
This marks Lithuania's third appearance at the World Team Championship, with several players having participated in previous events in Estonia and Croatia. The championship holds significant importance as it serves as the final qualifying stage for the World Games scheduled to take place in China next year, where 15 top-ranked teams will compete.
The competition begins with a group stage, where teams are divided into groups of six. Lithuania finds itself in a challenging Group A alongside Finland, the Czech Republic, France, Slovakia, and Hong Kong. The goal for Lithuania is to advance to the knockout stage by securing a higher placement than Slovakia, which is crucial for their World Games qualification aspirations.
The Lithuanian team is optimistic and well-prepared, having undergone extensive training leading up to the event. Captain Gabrielius Gricius expressed confidence in the team's readiness to showcase their best performance.
