Italian authorities have uncovered a significant international art forgery network, leading to the seizure of more than 2,100 counterfeit artworks. These forgeries were falsely attributed to renowned artists such as Banksy, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Amedeo Modigliani. The operation, named "Cariatide," commenced in March 2023 when Italian art police confiscated approximately 200 fake contemporary artworks from a businessman in Pisa, including a drawing of a caryatid falsely attributed to Modigliani. This discovery prompted further investigations, revealing a network of six forgery workshops across Europe, including locations in Tuscany and Venice. The seized artworks, if sold as originals, could have been valued at around €200 million. The investigation has led to 38 individuals being placed under investigation for handling stolen goods, forgery, and illegal sale of artworks. The operation has been hailed as a significant protective measure for the works of Banksy and other famous artists.
