NASA's Hubble Captures Supernova SN 2022aajn in Gemini Galaxy

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has photographed the galaxy in the constellation Gemini, revealing the supernova designated SN 2022aajn, according to the European Space Agency (ESA).

The galaxy is located approximately 600 million light-years from Earth. The image was taken about two months after the discovery of SN 2022aajn in the same galaxy. The supernova appears as a blue spot at the center of the image.

SN 2022aajn has not been the subject of published studies aside from its announcement in November 2022. By comparing the observed brightness with expected values, researchers can calculate the distance to the supernova and its host galaxy.

SN 2022aajn is classified as a Type Ia supernova, which occurs due to the explosion of a dead star's core. Such supernovae assist astronomers in measuring distances to far-off galaxies since they possess a consistent intrinsic brightness, regardless of their apparent brightness from Earth. They emit the same amount of light as other Type Ia supernovae.
