Heavy Rainfall in Oman, Oct 16, 2024

Muscat, Oman experienced significant rainfall as the tropical depression continues to affect various governorates. Rainfall varied across regions, with some areas reporting heavy showers while others received light precipitation. The capital city witnessed strong rain overnight, resulting in a notable drop in temperatures.

Areas such as Buraimi, Ibri, Mudhaibi, Al Qabil, Sur, Bahla, Haima, Ruwi, Wadi Kabir, MBD, Mahd, Suhar, Liwa, Yanqul, Shinas, Ja'alan Bani Bu Ali, Izki, Nizwa, Samail, Wadi Al Jizzi, Mahout, Masirah, and Dalkut reported rainfall.

In regions with heavy rainfall, rivers overflowed, causing water to accumulate on various roads. Although some areas experienced traffic disruptions, no significant emergencies were reported. The cloudy conditions reduced visibility on major roads, prompting authorities to advise drivers to reduce speed in affected areas.

The National Weather Monitoring Center announced that heavy rainfall is expected to continue today in Muscat, Dakhiliyah, Al Wusta, South Sharqiyah, South Batinah, Dhofar, Buraimi, Al Wusta, and Dahirah governorates, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms. Authorities also warned of possible hail. Municipalities have issued guidelines for safety during rainfall, advising against crossing flooded areas and visiting low-lying regions.

Meanwhile, families trapped in flooded homes in Sur and other areas were rescued by the Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority. All rescued individuals were reported to be safe. Some areas experienced power outages, but services were fully restored by the evening.

Road Closures

In response to the heavy rain, the Royal Oman Police temporarily closed the main road connecting Bousher and Amirate. Travelers were advised to use alternate routes.

Further Rain in Sur

The highest rainfall was recorded in Sur, located in the South Sharqiyah governorate, with 92 millimeters reported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources. Ja'alan Bani Bu Ali received 82 millimeters, Masirah 31 millimeters, Quriyat in Muscat governorate 13 millimeters, Amirate 11 millimeters, and Haima 3 millimeters.

School Closures

Due to the heavy rainfall, educational institutions in various governorates will remain closed today (Wednesday), as announced by the Ministry of Education. This closure applies to schools in Muscat, South Sharqiyah, Dakhiliyah, South Batinah, Buraimi, and Dahirah governorates. However, classes may be conducted online.
