Nepal Issues Red Alert Amid Storms

On September 27, 2024, Nepal's Civil Aviation Authority announced the cancellation of all domestic flights due to severe weather conditions. This decision follows a red alert issued by the country's meteorological division, predicting heavy rainfall and natural disasters across 56 out of 77 districts.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Authority (NDRRMA) has implemented measures including a nighttime vehicle movement ban for two days and advised citizens to avoid long-distance travel unless absolutely necessary. The ongoing monsoon is expected to intensify, potentially leading to severe thunderstorms.

Warnings have been issued for residents living near rivers or landslide-prone areas. The NDRRMA urged vigilance among communities, especially farmers in the Terai and Madhesh regions, advising them to refrain from harvesting crops during the red alert period. Authorities have also placed security forces and volunteers on standby for potential rescue operations as rising water levels in rivers pose a threat to agriculture, health, tourism, and transportation sectors.
