In a significant move to enhance coastal resilience, NOAA Fisheries has announced the availability of up to $100 million for habitat restoration projects, part of President Biden's Investing in America agenda.
This funding, under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aims to support communities, including U.S. tribes and Alaska Native corporations, in combating climate hazards. Up to 15% of the funding is specifically allocated for tribal organizations, reflecting NOAA's commitment to community involvement in environmental decision-making.
Applications for funding are due by April 16, 2025, and NOAA is prioritizing projects that restore marine and coastal ecosystems, which are crucial for sustainable fisheries and the recovery of endangered species. Restoration efforts, such as enhancing coastal wetlands and rebuilding coral reefs, are essential for both ecosystem health and community resilience.
Janet Coit, assistant administrator for NOAA Fisheries, emphasized that these investments will not only support local economies but also protect vital ecosystems from the impacts of climate change.
