Community Initiative to Restore Indigenous Forests in San Martzial

This Sunday, a community initiative to plant indigenous trees will take place in San Martzial, aiming to restore the region's native forests.

Organized by Kukubaso Elkartea, a platform for the recovery of original forests established in 2021, the event invites participation from all interested individuals. Participants can sign up for free via the labur.eus platform or through QR codes on event posters.

The gathering point for the reforestation effort is the Askatsu fountain at 10:30 AM, from where volunteers will head to deforested areas to plant saplings.

Participants are advised to wear long pants, hiking boots, and comfortable clothing, as they will need to bring their own water. The organization will provide work gloves and tools, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own if available.

The goal of this morning activity is to transform prairie areas into a diverse forest featuring birches, chestnuts, oaks, elms, and hawthorns, among other species. Once planted, organic and compostable protections will be placed around the saplings to aid their growth and shield them from wildlife. During the last visit to the San Martzial natural park, 250 saplings were planted, along with the creation of an insect shelter and the installation of nesting boxes for birds and bats.
