As climate change intensifies, the Iberian Peninsula faces increasingly severe droughts. In response, the Andalusian government has allocated €8 million to support 30 entities in developing 23 innovative projects aimed at addressing water scarcity in the region. Traditional cemeteries are being challenged as people seek sustainable alternatives that promote biodiversity. Eco-cemeteries are emerging, utilizing biodegradable materials and transforming burial sites into green spaces that contribute to carbon absorption and habitat restoration.
Countries like New Zealand and Sweden are leading the way with pilot projects turning burial grounds into forests of native flora.
