Urgent Restoration Efforts for European Hedgehog and Protected Species in France

As of October 2024, the European hedgehog has been classified as 'near threatened' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Europe. This alarming status raises concerns about its survival across various regions, including Orne, France.

Meanwhile, in the Occitanie region, significant restoration efforts are underway to preserve over 150 hectares of wetlands in Capvern. Local high school students from Masseube have recently participated in clearing invasive vegetation to support the habitat of the protected amphibious vole, another species classified as 'near threatened' in France.

These wetlands, managed by the Conservatoire d'Espaces Naturels, are crucial for the amphibious vole, which thrives in such environments. The students' work involved removing branches from recent clearing operations to prevent soil enrichment and maintain the delicate ecosystem.

Audrey Ratié, a site management officer, emphasizes the importance of these efforts in restoring habitats for endangered species. The ongoing restoration is vital not only for the amphibious vole but also for other flora and fauna affected by past agricultural practices and environmental changes.

As the situation becomes increasingly urgent, further restoration projects are planned to enhance the habitat for various species, including the rare marsh orchid, highlighting the critical need for immediate action in conservation efforts.
