Global Efforts to Restore Mangrove Ecosystems and Protect Biodiversity in Vietnam

In Vietnam, mangrove forests, which constitute only a small fraction of the country's forested area, are pivotal in combating climate change and protecting coastal ecosystems. Despite their significance, these ecosystems are severely threatened by climate change and natural disasters, particularly in central southern Vietnam's coastal provinces.

Recent initiatives have seen local governments and international organizations collaborate to restore and expand mangrove areas across Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, and Khanh Hoa. Notably, Quang Ngai has invested approximately 1.34 million USD in projects aimed at replanting mangroves, restoring over 109 hectares of vital habitat.

Binh Dinh province has also taken significant steps, planting nearly 90 hectares of mangroves since 2003, which play a crucial role in preventing erosion, preserving biodiversity, and supporting local economies through eco-tourism.

In Phu Yen, a new project set to launch in early 2024 aims to plant 50 hectares of mangroves, enhancing local aquatic biodiversity and providing sustainable livelihoods for communities in the area.

These restoration efforts are not only vital for environmental health but also for the local economy, as mangrove ecosystems support fisheries and tourism, attracting thousands of visitors each year to experience their unique beauty and ecological significance.

Meanwhile, in Spain's Cabañeros National Park, efforts are underway to manage the overpopulation of ungulates and establish a stable population of Iberian lynxes. The park, home to diverse flora and fauna, faces challenges due to limited staffing and the need for effective wildlife management strategies.

As the director of Cabañeros, María Jesús Sánchez Soler emphasizes the importance of scientific studies to monitor the park's health, including the conservation of native fish species and the successful breeding of the black vulture, which has become a symbol of the park's ecological success.

Both Vietnam and Spain highlight the global urgency of restoring and protecting vital ecosystems, underscoring the interconnectedness of biodiversity conservation and human livelihoods.
