A newborn Irrawaddy dolphin was sighted in Anlong Tbong Khla, Stung Treng province, marking a significant moment for conservation efforts in Cambodia. This calf, spotted on February 23, is the first to be recorded in 2025, bringing the total population of Irrawaddy dolphins in the country to 105.

The discovery was made by a research team from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' Fisheries Administration (FiA) and WWF Cambodia. The newborn was observed among a group of six adult dolphins, highlighting the importance of local conservation initiatives.

In a recent announcement, Agriculture Minister Dith Tina praised the collaborative efforts of river guards, local authorities, and citizens in preserving this vital aquatic species. He urged the public and fishermen to report any dolphin sightings, particularly calves, to the FiA.

In 2024, nine dolphin calves were born, while four dolphins died, resulting in a population increase from 99 in 2023 to 104. The ministry's ongoing conservation work has led to more frequent sightings of marine dolphins, including finless porpoises and pink dolphins.

Tina also noted the observation of other rare species, such as dugongs, in coastal areas. These sightings are attributed to enhanced cooperation with conservation organizations aimed at reintroducing endangered species back into their natural habitats.

Overall, the ministry's efforts to combat illegal fishing and promote sustainable practices have resulted in a significant increase in fish production, fulfilling 95% of domestic demand.
