Bill Gates' $645 Million Superyacht Breakthrough Completed Sea Trials, Up for Sale

Amsterdam, November 22, 2024 - The superyacht Breakthrough, commissioned by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, has successfully completed its sea trials. Despite the vessel's high-profile construction, Gates has opted not to take ownership of the yacht, which is now set to be sold.

Breakthrough, valued at $645 million, is notable for being the first superyacht powered by liquid hydrogen, stored at an extremely low temperature of -423 degrees Fahrenheit. This innovative design aligns with Gates' commitment to sustainable energy.

Measuring 390 feet in length, Breakthrough features luxury amenities including a library, movie theater, basketball court, pool, and a fully equipped hospital.

The yacht recently underwent trials near Amsterdam and is now heading to Edmiston, a luxury yacht seller. In comparison, Jeff Bezos' vessel, Koru, spans 417 feet and has an estimated annual operating cost of $25 million.

Edmiston CEO Jamie Edmiston stated, 'The brief was to build the greenest and most environmentally advanced yacht ever built, without compromise.' The reasons behind Gates' decision not to purchase the yacht remain unclear.

As of now, Gates holds an estimated net worth of $160 billion, making him the sixth-richest person globally.
