Discover Romania's Enchanting Mountain Railways: A Journey Through Time and Nature

Explore the breathtaking mountain railways of Romania, a hidden gem in Southeast Europe, with routes proposed for UNESCO inclusion. Experience the charm of the Mocănița trains, which offer fairy-tale views of fortified churches and Saxon villages in the heart of Transylvania.

Romania is home to many treasures—some natural, others man-made. Strangely, compared to other countries, many of these treasures remain underappreciated and unexplored. One such example is the Mocănița trains, of which only eight are currently operational, offering magical autumn journeys where only the little steam train can take you.

Semmeringul Bănățean: A Historic Journey

The Banat Mountain Mocănița runs between Oravița and Anina in Caraș-Severin, along the first mountain railway in Romania, established during the Austrian Empire over 160 years ago. Dubbed the "Semmeringul Bănățean" after the famous railway in Austria, this incredible route is a unique cultural monument and an engineering masterpiece proposed for UNESCO World Heritage status.

Spanning 34 kilometers, the journey takes about two hours, traversing through 14 tunnels, some so narrow they give the illusion of collision. The highest point is reached at the Gârliște Tunnel, the longest on the route (660 meters). Along the way, expansive clearings, deciduous forests, and deep valleys are crossed via stunning viaducts.

The journey begins at the historic Oravița station, the oldest railway station in Romania, inaugurated in 1854. The train operates daily during the season, with tickets available online or at the station for just 63 lei round trip.

The Enchantment of Valea Hârtibaciului

The Mocănița on Valea Hârtibaciului meanders through the southern hills of Transylvania, showcasing fortified churches and Saxon villages within a Nature 2000 reserve. This 14-kilometer round trip takes about 90 minutes and operates from March to October, depending on weather conditions.

After World War I, this route was part of Romania's longest narrow-gauge railway. Today, the Mocănița offers thematic rides, including poetry readings and concerts, making it a unique experience for visitors.

Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, the railway has been restored, allowing visitors to enjoy scenic rides in restored steam locomotives. Tickets can be purchased online for 30 lei per adult and 20 lei per child.

Exploring the Saxon Heritage

The Saxon villages of Transylvania are rich in history, featuring fortified churches that once served as refuge and food storage. The region boasts over 150 historical monuments, including the oldest rural house in Romania, dating back to 1508, now a museum.

For those traveling from Sibiu to Cornățel, it's only 20 kilometers, making it an ideal starting point for exploration. The area is perfect for nature-based tourism, with local businesses offering traditional experiences like horseback riding and wood-fired bread baking.

Romania's mountain railways are not just a means of transportation; they are a journey through history, culture, and stunning landscapes that inspire every traveler.
