Lavrov and Fidan Discuss Syrian Crisis

On January 23, 2025, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a telephone conversation to discuss the situation in Syria, as reported by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

During their discussion, both ministers agreed to maintain close contact regarding the Syrian issue and other pressing regional matters. This meeting comes in the wake of significant developments in Syria, where armed opposition groups launched a large-scale offensive against the Syrian army in late November 2024, culminating in their entry into Damascus on December 8. Following this, President Bashar Assad left the country and resigned from his position.

On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, who led the 'Salvation Government' in Idlib province, declared himself the head of a transitional Syrian cabinet that will function until March 1, 2025.
