India and Sri Lanka Forge New Agreements

On December 16, 2024, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake met in New Delhi to discuss strengthening bilateral relations. This visit marks Dissanayake's first overseas trip since taking office in September.

During their discussions, the leaders adopted a 'futuristic vision' aimed at enhancing cooperation in various sectors, including the conclusion of an Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) and a defense cooperation pact. Modi emphasized that the partnership would focus on investment-led growth and connectivity, highlighting the importance of physical, digital, and energy connectivity.

The leaders agreed to establish electricity grid connectivity and a multi-product petroleum pipeline between the two nations. Modi also committed to supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Sri Lanka's power plants and accelerating the Sampur Solar Power Project.

Trade relations were a significant topic, with both sides aiming to finalize the ETCA, which includes provisions on trade in goods, services, and various trade facilitation measures. Modi announced plans for a ferry service between Rameshwaram and Talaimanar to enhance connectivity.

Additionally, the leaders discussed regional security interests, agreeing on the interconnectedness of their nations' security. Dissanayake expressed gratitude for India's support during Sri Lanka's economic crisis in 2022 and acknowledged the importance of India in his country's foreign policy.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to further political engagement and cooperation in sectors such as defense, energy, agriculture, and tourism. Both leaders expressed optimism about the future of India-Sri Lanka relations.
