Swedish Shooting at Adult Education Center Leaves 11 Dead, Including the Gunman

A shooting at an adult education center in Örebro, Sweden, on February 4, 2025, resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people, including the gunman. The incident, which occurred at the Campus Risbergska adult education center, is being investigated as "attempted murder, arson, and aggravated weapons offenses." The gunman, a 35-year-old unemployed man with a hunting license, had no criminal record and was a resident of Örebro. Authorities believe he acted alone and have ruled out any links to criminal gangs or terrorist organizations.

The shooting began around 12:30 p.m. local time (11:30 GMT) at the Campus Risbergska, which offers classes for adults aged 20 and over, including basic and secondary education, Swedish language courses for immigrants, vocational training, and programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The school is located in Väst-haga, a neighborhood in Örebro, about 200 kilometers west of Stockholm.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the event as the "worst" of its kind in Swedish history. The country has experienced a significant increase in gun violence linked to criminal gang conflicts in recent years, resulting in about 10 deaths annually. While attacks of this nature are rare in Sweden, there have been several serious incidents in schools in recent years. In March 2022, an 18-year-old student stabbed two teachers to death at a secondary school in Malmö, southern Sweden. Two months earlier, a 16-year-old was arrested after injuring another student and a teacher with a knife at a school in the small town of Kristianstad.
