German Defense Minister Discusses NATO's Future and European Security Responsibilities

In a recent interview, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius addressed NATO's future amidst changing American foreign policy. Speaking from Lithuania, he emphasized that NATO remains the backbone of European security, despite concerns raised by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Pistorius stated that Germany's commitment to strengthening NATO is ongoing, noting the decision to permanently deploy a German Bundeswehr brigade to Lithuania, set to be combat-ready by 2027. He underscored the need for European nations to enhance their defense capabilities independently of U.S. support.

Regarding potential peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, Pistorius highlighted the necessity for Ukraine to secure guarantees from other nations to prevent future aggression. He also commented on Germany's financial support for Ukraine, supporting Chancellor Olaf Scholz's plan to fund aid through new credits for transparency.

Pistorius expressed confidence in the transatlantic partnership, asserting that resolving trade disputes and increasing European defense responsibilities could sustain U.S. interest in Europe. He concluded that maintaining a reliable partnership is essential for both sides.
