Significant Global Events on December 14, 2024: Threats to Scientists and Declining Agricultural Profits in Germany

On December 14, 2024, Jan Klas Berends, a historian at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt, publicly addressed a death threat he received via mail. The letter, which included an image of a gun and a threatening message, prompted Berends to share his experience on social media. He has been a vocal critic of those advocating for reduced support for Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression. The state prosecutor's office is now investigating the incident.

A study conducted by the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW) revealed that nearly 45% of German scientists have experienced threats or attacks, often ideologically motivated. The study highlighted that researchers discussing politically sensitive topics, such as the war in Ukraine or climate change, are particularly vulnerable to such hostility.

In related developments, Scicomm-Support, an organization established in June 2023, reported an increase in attacks on scientists. They provide urgent assistance, including psychological and legal support, to those facing threats. Since its inception, their support guide has been accessed over 2,300 times, and nearly 500 scientists have participated in preventive workshops. Women scientists are disproportionately affected, facing personal attacks that undermine their expertise.

In a separate report, German farmers are grappling with significant financial difficulties, with average earnings dropping 29% to €77,500 per farm in the 2023/2024 business year. This decline comes a year after widespread protests by farmers. High costs of energy, fertilizers, and pesticides, along with climate change impacts, have contributed to this downturn. The agricultural sector is calling for policy changes ahead of upcoming elections in February 2025.

Joachim Rukwied, head of the German Farmers' Association, emphasized the need for a shift in agricultural policy to restore competitiveness in the European market. He pointed out that while some sectors, like pig and poultry farming, have shown slight recovery, the overall mood in agriculture remains pessimistic.

As the agricultural community prepares for the parliamentary elections, the outcome could significantly influence future policies, including tax benefits for agricultural operations. Rukwied noted that the complexity of food processing significantly affects farmers' profit margins, underscoring the need for a more favorable regulatory environment.
