Starlink's Direct-to-Cell Service Launches on iPhones

Düzenleyen: Veronika Nazarova

Starlink, the satellite internet service from SpaceX, is set to revolutionize mobile connectivity with its new Direct-to-Cell (D2C) feature, allowing iPhones to access satellite networks directly without the need for additional hardware. This groundbreaking service aims to provide internet, voice calling, and messaging capabilities globally, even in areas lacking traditional cellular coverage.

The D2C service is currently in testing phases, with T-Mobile as a key partner. Initially available only for select Android devices, the support has now expanded to include iPhones following the release of iOS 18.3. This update enables users to send text messages via Starlink's satellite network, with plans to introduce data and calling services later.

Starlink describes its D2C service as akin to having a 'cellphone tower in space,' designed to eliminate connectivity dead zones. The service is expected to connect not just smartphones but also IoT devices by 2025, enhancing global connectivity.

Major telecom operators worldwide, including Rogers, KDDI, and Optus, have partnered with Starlink to integrate this innovative service.
